Computational infrastructure for our bioinformatics programs is extensive. Within the Gosnell building our bioinformatics laboratory includes a Sun Microsystems Enterprise 450 server (with 4 processors, 4GB of RAM and 432 GB storage. That is attached to a network attached storage (NAS) device with another 300GB of storage. In that laboratory there are 6 Sun Ultra 5 Workstations, a Windows 2000 server and various linux workstations for student use. The computers within our laboratory are connected to the RIT network via switched 100mbps Ethernet.
In addition we have access to a 108 cpu Beowulf class computer platform plexus.bioinformatics.rit.edu with 1 TB of attached and nearly 3TB of distributed storage.
Software
Our primary Bioinformatics software is the GCG Wisconsin Package. In addition we are running numderous other bioinformatics packages including PAUP, Genscan, the Staden Package, and others as the need arises.
